2023 Percy Clears cup cancelled

02 Sep 2023

Having returned to racing at the end of August, September arrived with blue-green algae keeping us out of the water.

This race celebrates Clare Doyle's long membership of the club, whilst recalling the poignant memory of Percy Clears, who joined the club in the 1900s with his three brothers. Percy was killed in action in October 1918 at Harlebeck, Flanders.  He was 36.

2023 George Brutton Louis Farbe cup

26 Aug 2023

George Brutton, a club regular from the 80s and 90s, was on hand to present race prizes for the cup with two names.  Rob Ouldcott had been whisked away for a weekend break by wife Sarah.  Brian Thomas deputised, and promptly had to anounce himself as winner of an amazing piece of silverware.

Plus massive congratulations were forthcoming all round for our latest conqueror of the English Channel, Laure Latham.

2023 Andean Trophy cancelled

19 Aug 2023

Blue-green algae still prevents us swimming in the lake.

The 800m race would have been the third in the four race "Emmi Hunt series" of races swum between February and October over varying distances -  February 50m (55 yards), March 100m (110 yards), August 800m (880 yards) with the final 90m (100 yard) race held in late October.

2023 Andrew Fuller Individual Medley

12 Aug 2023

Andrew Fuller, gentleman and backstroke supremo since 1985.

No race possible, so Kevin Blick keeps hold of the club's multi-discipline title for yet another year.

Was that a deep, but sad, sigh of relief from Dani and Mike on hearing news of the cancellation of the "hardest to handicap" event of the year?

2023 Biathlon

05 Aug 2023

After a four year absence (Covid, blue-green algae, and then royal mourning) the event was back to the delight (and suffering?) of many.

The event was introduced to the club fixture list in 1983 to develop relations between the swimming club and the recently established running club.  Four decades later many of today's entrants are able to claim "dual qualification".

29 Jul 2023

Club member Bobby Baxter joined us to present cup and prizes in memory of his 1889 Christmas Day winning great grandfather, who was a key club member in the late 19th century, serving on the committee from 1890 to 1902.

Members also had the chance to congratulate our vice-Captain Alan Luckhurst on his successful solo English Channel swim the previous week.
