Jones's Luck Dip Race for the Andrew and the Two Ronnies cup

What we missed on Saturday 17 October

Our race on Saturday would have been swum over 220 yards for in memory of Andrew and Ron Miller and Ron Hamill, three much-loved characters from not that long ago.  Norman and Lorraine Jones sponsor the race, providing "lucky-dip" prizes.

Ron Hammill was a regular from the late 1960s until the early 1990s. He was a Foreman at the Royal Albert Hall and would often provide complimentary tickets to events. Those for boxing and wrestling matches proved more popular with some club members than those for more ‘high brow’ cultural events.

Ron Miller was an ever present at the Serps midweek and weekends in the 1980’s and 90’s. After national service in the Parachute Regiment, Ron travelled the UK with an amateur acrobatics team giving public displays.

In the water, but not in the Serpentine

Ron Miller’s son Andrew was a young and enthusiastic member of the club. Andrew moved to Brighton, where sadly in 2014 he was reported missing having gone swimming in the sea.   His body was recovered some weeks later.

In early summer 1990 Ron Hamill suffered a seizure whilst under the cold lakeside shower and was resuscitated by Ron Miller who had recently attended a first aid course run by Norman Jones.

Ron Miller's National Service years in the Parachute Regiment may well explain his acrobatic sense of balance, blunt sense of humour and quick sense of mind when attending to Ron Hammill.

Ron Miller was a better skier than swimmer. The picture shows he still had it in his 70s.

Norman joined the Club in 1983. He won the Bridge to Bridge in both 1989 and 1994, the Christmas Day Peter Pan race in 1991 and has been club champion multiple times. He was Club President 2013-2016, a current committee member and a vice President. Norman is a qualified swimming teacher, first aid trainer and RLSS lifeguard trainer and assessor.

Norman and Lorraine met in the late 1960s whilst both were Pontins holiday camp Bluecoats.  Lorraine is also a club member and a regular friendly, smiley, chatty presence Serps-side.  Next Saturday, 24 October, they will celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary.  Congratulations from us all.
