George, who  celebrates his 70th birthday on Monday travelled up from his home in Salisbury to present the cup and prizes to the first eight finishers. The Cup was formally known as the ‘Louis Fabre Cup’ and for the biography of that long time Serpentine member and highly competitive sportsman see the link below to a fascinating article from 2016 by John Tierney.

George joined the Club in 1982 and won the Christmas Day race in 1986 he took over the sponsorship of this race in 1991. George was a breaststroke swimmer and unusually amongst Serpentine members, was never heard to complain about his handicap. Before moving to Salisbury George was a regular weekday and Saturday swimmer remembered by older club members for his pinstripe suits and general sartorial elegance.
